Reflections and Insight from Data Centre World

Held over two days as part of Tech Show London, DCW is one of the largest data centre events in the world. Experts from across the whole ecosystem are brought together by the opportunity to promote their wares, catch up on the latest developments and to network. For Bensons, it provides the opportunity to meet with suppliers, customers and potential customers to learn about the challenges they are dealing with and how we can collaborate to resolve them.

Currently, these challenges are focused primarily around sustainable and effective cooling, system resilience, together with speed, scale and agility of deployment.

When most people think of a data centre, they imagine a large, featureless building with rows upon rows of quietly humming servers providing the computing power to allow us all to do whatever it is we occupy our time with on the internet.

As AI has matured and its use is increasingly entering day-to-day life, the roll-out of data centre infrastructure in the UK, Europe and globally has accelerated, and is forecast to continue to do so.

A key element of deployment, particularly in the UK, is access to sites with adequate power and connectivity, and then making optimum use of the available power to operate and provide cooling. This needs to be combined with the ability to deploy at speed and scale to a consistently high level of quality.

These characteristics align well with the expertise we have at Bensons and complement our ability to work across different sectors and our commitment to sustainability. Given the importance of the efficient use of energy, it is only natural that there is a requirement for a world-class building management system to control the environment for the ‘quietly humming’ racks of servers.  In addition, higher-tier data centres require backup power solutions to allow them to operate through extended-duration power outages. This capability is often supplied by diesel or gas generators in addition to grid plus UPS power.

Bensons can bring decades of experience to both sides of this equation, with an enviable reputation in both the BMS sector and distributed energy

As with everything we do, our approach is to collaborate with our customers to fully understand requirements, create a robust design and then manufacture to the highest level of quality to enable high-confidence deployment at speed.
