Consequently, it is hugely gratifying to be shortlisted by the Family Business Community in their annual awards, particularly since the category is Manufacturing Excellence.

Family businesses make up over 90% of UK private sector businesses, accounting for almost half the UK private sector turnover, meaning that they are hugely important for the UK economy. Consequently, the network for collaboration and learning provided by the Family Business Community is invaluable in supporting continued development, growth and success for all such businesses. Hence, recognition within the community is a major achievement.

The Manufacturing Excellence award looks at both what the nominated companies do, but importantly, how they do it, taking account of a range of factors, meaning this is a substantive evaluation of both the capabilities and character of a company. These factors include: 

• The history and milestones of the business
• The role of family members in the business
• The governance structure to ensure accountability in decision making
• The vision and values of the business, and how they influence and guide decisions about the business and its future
• How equality, diversity and inclusion are fostered and promoted
• Plans and aspirations for future growth
